Bottom line

Melio Go includes up to 5 standard ACH payments each month; optional methods and services can cost extra. Between roughly 10 and 50 domestic invoices a month with QuickBooks or Xero, BILL's Essentials or Team plan is the standard choice at $49-65/user/month, though its ACH and wire fees now add real cost on top. A finance team that wants corporate cards and basic bill-pay software without a subscription, while budgeting payment-method fees should look at Ramp before either. Once more than 15-25% of vendors are outside the US, obtain a Tipalti Accounts Payable quote, published from $99/month, including payment, module and implementation conditions rather than assuming a universal enterprise minimum. AvidXchange only makes sense above roughly 500 invoices a month, where its vendor-side fee structure and 6-10 week implementation are justified by payment volume, not by feature count.

Is it right for you?

  • Before signing, ask the vendor directly what the per-ACH and per-wire fee is at your expected monthly volume, not just the subscription price.
  • Confirm whether the quoted price includes unlimited users or charges per seat, since that changes the real cost by 2-5x for a finance team of any size.
  • Ask what happens to pricing at renewal, several vendors in this category have introduced new fees or restructured tiers mid-contract in 2026.
  • Get the international wire and same-day payment fee schedule in writing if you pay any vendors outside the US.
  • Check whether the quoted Tipalti product and modules cover your required ERP, such as NetSuite or Sage Intacct, and include any implementation or payment charges.

Core summary: what AP automation actually costs in 2026

This page compares AP automation and bill payment pricing. This correction checks selected Ramp, Melio and Tipalti fees and plan conditions against official sources on October 12, 2026. Other vendor figures remain earlier estimates and need current quotes; this review does not establish that every listed price or feature has been independently reverified.

The short version: BILL now runs $49-89 per user per month plus new per-transaction ACH and wire fees that were not part of its pricing a year ago. Melio is no longer unconditionally free, it covers 5 ACH payments a month at no cost, then charges $0.50 per additional payment or moves you to a $25-80/month tier. Tipalti publishes Accounts Payable from $99/month and the distinct Mass Payments product from $249/month, with unlimited users; payment charges, optional modules and a custom quote still matter. AvidXchange and more complex Tipalti configurations require product-specific quotes. None of these platforms are priced the way they were described in most reviews written before mid-2026.

Use the table below for the numbers, then read the sections after it for what the sticker price does not tell you.

A note on what "entry tier" means here: for BILL and Melio it is the cheapest paid or free plan a real small business would actually run AP through. For Tipalti, Accounts Payable and Mass Payments are separate published product starting prices; a supplier self-service portal does not establish self-serve purchasing or a universal contract minimum. For AvidXchange there is no published self-serve tier at all, every account goes through sales, so the number in the table is a range assembled from what verified customer reports and implementation quotes describe, not a list price.

Why the headline price is not what you pay

Every vendor in this category leads with a subscription number. None of them lead with the number that actually determines your monthly bill once you are paying real invoice volume: the per-transaction fee.

Take a two-person finance team on BILL's Essentials plan processing 40 ACH payments a month. The subscription is $98/month for two seats. The ACH fees, at $0.59 each, add another $23.60. Pay two vendors by international wire and that is another $39.98. The subscription price undersold the real bill by roughly 65% before a single check goes out. This is not a BILL-specific problem, it is how the category prices itself: the number in the ad is the floor, not the ceiling.

At 15 standard ACH payments in a month, Melio Go includes 5 and charges $0.50 for each of the remaining 10: $5 in usage fees plus its $0 subscription. Core at the cited $25 monthly subscription includes 20 standard ACH payments, so these assumptions put Go $20 below Core, not above it. Extra users, approval requirements, accounting-sync limits and other payment methods can change the comparison; payment count alone does not decide the suitable plan.

The rule worth remembering: multiply your actual monthly payment count by the per-transaction fee before comparing subscription prices across vendors. A platform with a higher subscription and lower per-payment fee can be cheaper in total than a free platform with a per-payment charge, once volume is high enough. Do the multiplication for your actual invoice count, not the vendor's example customer.

International payments amplify this further. BILL's wire fee sits at $19.99 per transfer regardless of amount, so a $200 vendor payment eats a 10% fee while a $20,000 payment barely notices it. Tipalti and AvidXchange both flag the same pattern for their own fee structures: small international payments, especially under $50, can lose a disproportionate share of the payment to combined platform and correspondent bank fees. If you pay a roster of small international vendors or creators, model the fee on your smallest typical payment, not your average one.

What actually changed in 2026 (and why older comparisons are wrong)

Three of the vendors in this table changed their pricing model, not just their numbers, during 2026. Comparison articles written before these changes are describing a different product than what you will actually be quoted today.

Melio dropped unconditional free ACH. For years, "Melio is free, BILL charges per user" was the entire pitch in dozens of AP comparison articles, including several on this site before this correction. That is no longer accurate. The owner-only Go tier has no per-user fee; paid tiers charge for additional users under their applicable terms, but ACH is now free only for the first 5 payments a month, after which it is $0.50 per transfer, or you move to a paid tier ($25, $55, or $80/month) that raises the included allotment. The free tier still makes Melio the cheapest option for very light users, but "free" needs a volume qualifier attached to it now.

Tipalti publishes two distinct product starting prices. Accounts Payable starts at $99/month and Mass Payments at $249/month, each with unlimited users. AP lists per-invoice and payment charges plus optional Procurement, Expenses and Treasury modules; Mass Payments has payment transaction charges. Standard implementation is included, while complex environments may need additional professional services. Request the product-specific sales quote for actual scope and terms; the published supplier portal does not prove self-serve purchasing or a required $449-600 enterprise contract.

BILL added transaction fees to a previously fee-light payment layer. Older BILL pricing descriptions, including some still circulating, describe ACH payments as included at no extra charge beyond the subscription. As of this pricing check, BILL charges $0.59 per ACH transfer, $1.99 per mailed check, 2.9% on card payments, and $19.99 per international wire, on top of the $49-89/user/month subscription. This is the most consequential correction on this page: BILL's real monthly cost for an active AP team is meaningfully higher than the subscription price alone suggests, and it was not this way as recently as a few months ago.

What did not change: Brex's Essentials/Premium structure ($0 and $12/user/month) matched its 2026 pricing page exactly, no update needed there. AvidXchange remains sales-led with no published self-serve pricing, consistent with its long-standing model.

Reading the table by company profile

Very light AP volume: Melio Go includes up to 5 standard ACH payments per month without a subscription. Additional transfers and optional services carry their applicable charges; check user, approval and sync needs before deciding whether a paid tier is necessary.

Small business on QuickBooks or Xero, 10-50 invoices a month, needs at least one approver beyond the person entering bills: BILL Essentials or Team. Budget for the per-transaction ACH and wire fees on top of the subscription, they are not optional and they are not small once volume is real.

Startup or small team that wants cards and basic bill pay in one free platform and does not need multi-level approval routing: Ramp's Free software covers core Bill Pay without a subscription, with payment charges varying by funding source and transfer method. It is not a substitute for BILL's approval depth once you need it, but most companies do not need that depth on day one.

Companies paying international vendors: obtain a Tipalti AP quote, with a published starting price of $99/month, and compare the required currencies, destinations, modules and transaction charges against the selected BILL payment methods. The percentage of overseas vendors alone does not establish eligibility or a cheaper total cost.

500+ invoices a month with a large supplier base: evaluate the required AvidXchange and Tipalti configurations through quotes and an implementation plan. Tipalti includes standard implementation and may charge for complex professional services; do not assume every configuration requires the same setup fee or rollout time.

FAQ: AP automation pricing

Is any AP automation tool actually free? Ramp's core plan and Melio's Go plan are both genuinely free with no subscription charge. Ramp lists standard external-bank ACH at $0.59 and checks at $1.99; qualifying payments funded from Ramp Checking receive the specified waiver, while delivery extras remain chargeable. Melio's Go plan covers the first 5 ACH transfers each month at no cost; every transfer beyond that runs a flat $0.50. Neither charges a per-user fee at the free tier. Above light volume, both eventually cost something, just structured differently than a subscription.

Why did BILL start charging for ACH payments? BILL has not published a stated reason for adding the $0.59 per-ACH and $19.99 per-wire charges alongside its existing per-user subscription. What is verifiable is that the fee now exists and applies regardless of plan tier, so a company still budgeting off last year's BILL fee sheet will underestimate its actual monthly cost. Confirm current transaction fees directly with BILL before finalizing a budget, since how this whole vendor group prices its product has shifted more than once over the past two years.

Does Tipalti's self-serve $99 tier replace the enterprise plan? The advertised entry fee applies to Accounts Payable; it is not proof that customers can buy without sales or that every complex configuration is covered. Mass Payments is a separate product from $249 per month. For multi-entity operations or ERP requirements such as Sage Intacct, request a quote specifying the required modules, charges for payouts and consulting charges for a complex rollout without treating $449-600 or a 12-month commitment as requirements for every account.

How often does AP software pricing change, and how was this page verified? Prices and included features can change, so obtain a current vendor quote before committing. The October 12, 2026 correction here checks selected official conditions for Melio, Tipalti and Ramp; it does not certify every older vendor estimate on the page. Confirm the chosen payment rail, included transaction count, additional modules and contract terms for your own account.

What to do next

Most AP and expense tools offer a free trial or demo. We recommend testing 2–3 options with your actual accounting software before committing to an annual contract.
